Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-10-28
This policy explains what information the Windows app Show Me the File and this website, jhworks.app, handle. The app does not send usage records or statistics and shows no ads, and it never sends file names or search terms off your PC. It does connect to the app's release repository to check for updates, as described below.
What the app sends over the internet
Update checks
- When: when the app starts, every 24 hours after that, and when you click “Check for updates”.
- What: an update request.
- When you update to a new version, the app downloads the installer and its checksum file from the app's release repository.
- The operator of the app's release repository may process your IP address and other request details under its own policy.
- The Microsoft Store version does not check for updates in the app; the Store updates it.
Support link
The [Support] link on the About page of the app's Settings window (shown next to “This program is sustained by your support.” until you check “I've donated”) only opens this site's support page (jhworks.app/support) in your default browser. Only the display language code (for example, ?lang=en) is added to the address. The app never receives or stores payment information.
What the app does not do
- No usage records or statistics are sent
- No automatic crash reports
- No ads or tracking
- File names and search terms never leave your PC
What is stored only on your PC
The app keeps its data in a data folder on your PC:
- Installed version:
%LocalAppData%\ShowMeTheFile - Portable version: the
ShowMeTheFile-datafolder next to the exe (%LocalAppData%\ShowMeTheFileif that location is not writable) - Microsoft Store version: the app package's data folder
The data folder contains:
- The file name index (if you ran the app as administrator, it is in
index-admin\, which only administrators can read) - Settings,
settings.json(including the “I've donated” mark and the display name you entered) - Search history,
history.json, and tabs,tabs.json - App logs,
logs\(deleted automatically after 30 days)
How to delete your data
- Installed version: uninstall the app in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 10: Apps & features). This removes the program folder, the data folder, the auto-start task, and the shortcuts.
- Portable version: choose “Delete temporary data and exit…” from the tray icon menu and then delete the folder, or simply delete the exe and the
ShowMeTheFile-datafolder. - Microsoft Store version: uninstalling the app also removes its package data folder.
- Search history can be cleared in the Settings window.
This website (jhworks.app)
- This site uses no analytics, tracking, or advertising cookies, and collects nothing itself, apart from the server logs kept by its host, Cloudflare. The only exception: when you download an installer or checksum file, the site counts only the number of downloads by date, file name, and country you connect from. It does not store anything that could identify you, such as your IP address.
- It uses only one cookie, to remember the language you choose, which you can delete in your browser settings. To choose the language and the donation buttons shown, it uses your browser language and the country you connect from, but does not store them.
- Donations are made by bank transfer to the donation account shown on the support page, or through KakaoPay, Ko-fi, or PayPal. Transfers and payments are handled by your bank and each service under its own privacy policy; this site receives no payment information.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
